'95 s-10 paint flaking

Question:

My dad has a ‘95 Chevrolet S-10 with black paint which is flaking pretty badly. Does anyone know of a recall or anything on the paint? My poor brother washed it this weekend after borrowing it from him for a while, and got a sick feeling when the paint started coming off as he washed it. The truck lives in the Dallas/East Texas area and to our knowledge has had no encounters with hail. Thanks for any info. -Barry

Response:

Sounds typical of a GM paint job. Take it back to the dealer where you bought it.

Response:

Where they will laugh at him and say have a nice day!  WHat dealer is going to paint a 5+ year old vehicle for free?  Hell, even if he won an arbitration, chances are he would still have to pay some of the cost of a repaint.  This thread has been beaten to death, ALL the US manufacturers of that era had adhesion problems in 1 form or another. Some would repaint/repair early on but as the timeline gets longer, I’m sure there are even less willing to do much. > Sounds typical of a GM paint job. Take it back to the dealer where you bought > it.

Before you buy.

Response:

Actually, though you may be correct, paint problems were NOT common as late as 1995.  I would certainly take it to the dealer.  The dealer will not laugh because the customer can’t ask THEM to fix it.  They will see if GM will pay to repaint.  I highly doubt they will unless it’s common (and in my experience, it’s not). What comes to mind is that you are probably in a corrosive environment…which kind of supports the argument I’m having on the value of paint sealant…<please tell me it’s not sealed> Ken.

Well, I have a ‘91 S10 two tone gray, which I had a GM Dealer repaint for FREE about 4 years ago..The truck was over 5 years old, had over 100,000, and I wasn’t the first owner..

Response:

Alright, how’d you get them to repaint it.  I’ve also heard something about taking them to small claim court to get the GM to cover the cost of repaint. Does anybody know anything about that?

You don’t know what the fuck your’re talking about Zippy. GM had no paint problems in this recent a vehicle. You’re confusing it with ‘88,’89 vintage vehicles. That GM actknowledged there was a problem and repainted the cars for free. If their was a problem why does my ‘95 Grand Am look brand new? Paint just doesn’t flake off in clumps on a 4 year old  vehicle just for the hell of it. Unless the car was abused or was parked in a hostile/corrosive environment. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Sounds typical of a GM paint job. Well, for your fuckingh information Timmy. I didnt write that fucking reply. And they didn’t just have problems with 88 and 89’s. I got the fucking slip from the GM dealer proving they repainted my ‘91 S10 because the paint on the left side of the bed, a few inches from the back tire, started flaking off..And you’re ‘95 Grand Am came from a different paiunt shop as his ‘95 S10..Maybe a bad mixture in that particular shop/paint color..Or who knows maybe it was a bad enviroment..It could have been alot of things…And to let you know, my sisters boyfriend has a ‘98 S10, black, which he loves more than my sister, and the paint started flaking on the roof..So, mr. fucking attitude..Why dont you back the fuck up and pull that corn cob out your tight-ass..dick

Who pissed in your fucking Cheerios this morning? And if you were a little more careful you would have noticed that my reply wasn’t directed towards you in the first place. Whats wrong your news reader? Broken? Or did you mistakenly assume that Zippy was referring to zipioc. BWAHAHAHAHA. That was funny. You just made my day. Be a lttle more careful next time, it will save you from making a total ass out of yourself. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Response:

Well, when you say Zippy, and quote my reply,..It isn’t hard to assume you’re replying to me.

I’m not interested in participating in the flames but I had an 88 Suburban that got repainted twice. With that year, as I understand, GM had problems with the dark blue, black and gray and primarily in the Southeast. In about ‘92 the dealer painted the top only. Did a really crappy job. I told them I had done better paint jobs in my driveway. In ‘94 they painted the entire truck. Better job but even then I had to talk with the manager of the dealership. If I recall correctly the dealer had to submitt a request to GM and get it approved. In ‘92 it had about 90,000 miles and in ‘94 it had about 140,000 miles.
