How? I don’t know of anyone who pays the dealer in full before the vehicle is delivered. And I don’t know of any dealer who pays the manufacturer until the car arrives. On the contrary, it’s common for the manufacturer to loan the price to the dealer until the car is sold. <snip> — -Stephen H. Westin The information and opinions in this message are mine, not Ford’s.

>Well, he called the dealer and they say the reason that it is not even >scheduled to be made yet is that Chevrolet is out of V-6 engines!!! >I find this VERY hard to beleive!!! You like that one, try Jeep. It seems the entire production of the 4.0L "HO" I6 is slated for use in their Grand Cherokee, the net result being that Jeep announced back in March that you could NO LONGER order a Jeep Wrangler with the I6 and if you wanted one you’d have to wait until the 1996 model year (when the Wrangler is undergoing a styling change that will make it look like an overgrown Geo Tracker.) Then Chrysler complains when Jeep sales or down. Gee, when you’ve just told potential customers to take a flying leap? I ordered a GMC Sonoma V6 (same truck, different trim) on 13 Feb and got the truck on 30 Mar about 6.5 weeks later. The dealer did say that GM was pushing 4 cylinders and that 6 cylinders were hard to get except on special order. —

This is just another fine example of how industry and business in general are making money and raking the consumer over the coals. It’s called JIT ( just in time) production. The idea is to have the parts manufactured at different locations and ship them out the door and assembled as soon as they get there. With this they save overhead and storage costs and a few other things. It works ok when everything goes just right but if one little gliche happens you are stuck waiting. The consumer goes without and the manufacturer still gets his money. They do the same at department stores, that is why when you buy something like a refrigerator you might have to wait for a few days until you get it and then pay a shipping charge on top of that. They save money by using a central hub of storage and thus don’t have to stock as many at thier locations. This is all good and fine if you don’t need a refrigerator "right now" like I did when mine stopped one day. In this case they did loose my business. Same old story different day, the consumer gets the short end of the stick and the big ones get the club. I ordered a 95 Blazer the last week of Dec 94. I didn’t get it until the first week in May 95. I was told that they were short on 4×4 xmissions. The dealer told me in December that he was just getting in orders from September/October. It seemed like a long wait since most factory orders only take 6-8 weeks. However, when the build was finally scheduled, it took less than a week to get to the dealer from the factory.
