allison trans. ??

Question:

I’d advise that any automatic tranny not be idled in gear.  That is when the average tranny gets its’ worst beating through overheating.  Notice I said ‘average’.

What’s "502"? > can idrive this in (D) in stop and go traffic.

Yes. > owners manual wasnt real clear about it.

Well, let’s see now… 2002 Silverado manual – Pg 2-30: DRIVE (D):  This position is for normal driving… DRIVE (D) can be used when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, driving on steep hills or for off-road driving. You may want to shift the transmission to THIRD (3) or, if necessary, a lower gear selection if the transmission shits too often. To me, that says that you CAN leave it in DRIVE (D) in stop and go traffic. Have fun!                          :) JR — 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD  8.1L  V8  4×4 2002 Toyota Corolla LE

I have been looking for someone who has had problems with the new Duramax. I have one with 4000 miles and intend to pull a 27 foot 5th wheeler for 2000 miles in a few weeks. have heard there have been problems with it. the manual says,"  I On Page 2-25 and 2-26.  It says," If your vehicle is equipped with > the Allison Transmission,  DO NOT IDLE in Drive (D) for more than 5 > minutes.  Extended idling in Drive (D) may cause transmission overheating > and damage.  Always select PARK (P) if the idle time is longer than 5 > minutes."

I believe what they mean if you are staionary, it would be best to put in park or neutral .  I just found out about this having thought I read the manual the first time.  So, is there rumors going around that the allison is giving the duramax owners some problems?  I hope not, I don’t want to get stuck in the middle of timbuctoo with a broken transmission – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> i just got a 2500 silverado 502 with allison trans and a 4:10 gear. > What’s "502"? > can idrive this in (D) in stop and go traffic. > Yes. > owners manual wasnt real clear about it. > Well, let’s see now… > 2002 Silverado manual – Pg 2-30: > DRIVE (D):  This position is for normal driving… > DRIVE (D) can be used when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, > driving on steep hills or for off-road driving. I was just talking with my Dad about these last night. He has a direct friend that is already on his second Allison after only a few thousand miles on a brand spankin’ new truck! His friend has also noted he can’t stand the way the transmission is constantly shifting even when going down hill while towing. And from what he is told, they aren’t easy shift either. Personally it sounds like I’d wait another year or two ’til the non-compensated R & D research on the customer base is complete! Best of luck, Kevin
