GM 4L60E Failure at 46,000 miles
Question:
I have a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab, HD 2500, with a 6.5 liter turbo diesel, and the 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission. Two days ago while driving down the interstate, it failed, and now will only engage into 1st gear. I am aware of ALL the problems and TSB’s with the 700r4…..Is this basically the same "weak" transmission? Does anyone have any advice on how to get GM to repair this tranmission? It is at the dealership waiting to be looked at. I am hoping to get info to help arm myself for a fight if GM does not offer a repair for the premature failure. Thanks for any helpful advice CMS

Need more info: 1. Does it shift and slip in other gears or just stuck in first? 2. Any prior probs? 3. Service engine light?
Response:
If you have a 2500 diesel you don’t have a 4L60E you have a 4L80E (all 3/4 ton and 1 ton use the 4L80E). This trans isn’t even in the same ballpark as the 700R4, nothing you’ve read about the 700R4 applies to the 4L80E as it is a totally different trans. The best way I can describe it is a TH400 with an overdrive and a lot of improvements. You don’t mention mileage or if you have used it for towing and how much, that info will have a large bearing on wether GM offers a repair. You can also find out what the failure was to a degree, as the computer will store trouble codes. Take Care, Elf OBTW, if you really DO have a 4L60E in your truck, and it came that way from GM, you have a lot to talk to them about! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab, HD 2500, with a 6.5 liter turbo >diesel, and the 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission. >Two days ago while driving down the interstate, it failed, and now will only >engage into 1st gear. >I am aware of ALL the problems and TSB’s with the 700r4…..Is this basically >the same "weak" transmission? >Does anyone have any advice on how to get GM to repair this tranmission? I have a 1996 GMC Suburban 1500. I beleive it has the 4l60E transmission in it . Any problems I should know about . Thanks Paul
Response:
It is "stuck" in first gear…it will go into reverse, but the power is mininal. I had NO indication of any problem, never slipped or acted up at all. A week earlier, the "check throtle" light came on, then the engine hesitated and the throtle came back on…does that have anything to do with it? Thanks
Response:
why bother diagnosing it. If you are the original owner, it is under warranty. Brian UAWproud GM Iron Foundry Defiance, Ohio Buy whatever you desire, but consider American job preservation for your children’s sake http://www.geocities.com/heartland/hills/6768 and /8685

The dealership says that there were not trouble codes given by the transmission. Is that possible..wouldn’t it have some code? Even it just to say, not shifting properly?
Response:
I am not sure why that should make a difference on the quality or durability of a product, but, unfortunately I am the second owner. The dealer has offered a 50/50 split but thats on his retail cost, so basically I am getting a discount.
