If you do lots of "stop and go" driving, I would not recommend a Cummins turbo diesel! Stop and go driving and short trips are very hard on a turbocharger. Mike

Yeah I know that.  But I am using my personal truck way too much on the farm.  We are thinking of just keeping my Z-71 as our Farm Truck, but for all of our towing/trips to the lake (110 miles each way), and for the transport of our alfalfa, get a Diesel.  We have had several Diesel’s in years past.  We just got rid of a 92 Dodge with a Cummins.  It had nearly 390,000 miles on it, with only 1 tranny replacement and regular fuel injector cleanings. I tow an 18.5 foot champion with all the gear for two anglers as many as 500 miles one way.  My 97 Silverado 2500 with the V8 (and factory towing package) has never failed me yet.  When towing on uneven ground it is necessary to manually shift out of overdrive but on level ground there has never been a problem.  Mine is not 4 wh. drive and I have never had a problem on any boat ramp.  As with all pickups they are light on the rear wheels unless you add weight. I previously had a ford pickup and was not near as happy with it.

I tow my 1996 Champion 202 Elite with a 1997 Chevy Extended Cab, 5.7L V8, Z-71 package.  IT is great for towing my boat.  I was and am still contemplating getting a diesel, such as a Powerstroke or Cummins.  I drive about 40k miles a year on our farms and taking my boat to the lake.  I get about 11.5 mpg pulling my boat, and without the boat I get about 16-17 mpg —lots of stop’n go. I love my truck.  Its either a lift and some 33’s or a new diesel :) Jay Stone El Paso, Texas

The new Chevrolet Silverado is excellant for towing!  The new 5.3l engine has more than enough power and low end torque to handle any bass boat. The Z71 package you spoke of is a suspension upgrade for OFF ROAD  4WD if you need that, it also adds $$$ to the cost of the vehicle.  I am a Chevrolet service tech and have found there to be very little problems with the new trucks!                           Keep the line tight                           Allen

My 1997 lost the torque converter/tranny on a trip back from Dallas, Texas to El Paso, Texas (trip that I purchased my 202 elite).   Dealer kept insisting that it was because I towed in OD and not D(3).  I explained to them that the "3" in the shift column was highlighted, so if for some reason that meant it was in OD I would like for an explanation why so.  :) Other than that happening, my truck has been wonderful.  This is the first Chevrolet product I have ever owned.  I am 23, but I have had my fair share of autos over the past 7 years or so.  I have owned all ford vehicles, and loved them all.
