locking hubs

Question:

My stock automatic locking hubs are gone.  I would like to replace them with either same automatic ones or manual hubs.  I need some recomendations regarding that.  I also would like to know if the hubs made by Warn are worth getting. Thank You

The auto hubs seem to be available only from Ford. Aftermarket kits made by Warn are the most popular manual conversion. Regulars in the group say that this is a good way to go, with costs in the $200 range for parts, including adapters for the conversion.  I know that Pep Boys stores can get them. dr bob

Has anyone else had to replace their front auto-locking hubs?  Is this common (at about 50,000 miles)? I have a ‘94 Explorer. Jeff

Mine have been OK but I have seen lots of posts on this newsgroup regarding this problem.  Most folks seem to replace the auto hubs with a manual locking version by Warner if I remember right. Bert — REMOVE *NOSPAM* if replying by email —

Jeff I had  a ‘92 Ranger with 60000 miles on it with no problems from the locking hubs. Traded    that for a ‘95 Ranger and the dealer had to replace the hubs three, thats right  3 times in 30,000 miles. At 35,000 miles they started to act up again, so I traded for my ‘96 Explorer AWD. A freind of mine also had to have his replaced on his’93 when he had less than 10,000 miles on his.I guess this is a weak link for a couple years there.  Good luck with replacing them. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Has anyone else had to replace their front auto-locking hubs?  Is this common > (at about 50,000 miles)? Warn are the best and very simple to install.  I am a novice DIY guy and did both sides in about  90 minutes. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have a 78 chevy 1-ton welding rig truck about 9000 pounds who makes  the > best locking hubs for this application > Alan L Hales > Houston

The best what, you fool?  Warn makes a lot of stuff. Response:

hi all does anyone know if manual hubs are available for a 88 s10 blazer thanks

Response:

As far as know they are not available. When you go into 4wd, the transfer case engages the front driveshaft and a vacuum actuator engages the front drive axles. To the best of my knowledge, there are no locking hubs of any kind on the S-10 blazers or S-10 pickups.

Response:

There are kits available to replace the vacuum actuator with a mechanical cable that you operate from inside the cab. Kenny Whitman Home of 1960-66 Chevrolet Trucks http://users.bendnet.com/nibbsmtn/60chevy66/
