question about a vibration, noise

Question:

I know this is Chevy group, but I trust you guys, I lurk here a lot and the advice you guys give is always good… so I’m gonna ask a question about a Ford…     The basics:  1992 Econoline Ford Van 5.8L (351) w/ electronic 4 speed auto trans (e4od) (has an overdrive) w/ towing package 110,000 has been used to tow a boat.      The problem:  At all speeds, irregularly, a loud and significant vibration can felt and heard, it starts when you are coming close to cruising speed, but still in the throttle a little bit (under a slight load)(not towing).  Only reproduced over 30mph at least in the short test drive I gave it.  as soon as you let off the throttle, it goes away, you can then get into the throttle again without the vibration coming back.  happens both with the OD on and off.       My unprofessional thoughts:  I thought perhaps it could be a problem with the torque converter locking.       My father’s thoughts via phone consult (30+ years as a mechanic): he seems to think its a bad plug / wire / cap.  suggested the spray bottle / dark garage test to look for shorts.       I appreciate your time and efforts in helping me fix this problem. ~Dave — 03 Wrangler se 4WD 00 Chevy S-10 4WD 95 Virago XV750 If you really want to e-mail me direct… please make the subject line say "this is not spam" or else, I won’t get it… don’t send me spam under the guise of not being spam, unless you want reported… and is loosing your IP, or e-mail address worth it?  ~dave

Response:

If this vibration is loud or audible as you say it is not a miss in the engine or a slipping TCC, which can mimic an engine miss, it is more likely a driveshaft problem. A miss or TCC condition would be felt but not heard.

I’m not a mechanic , but what you describe is exactly what I just went through with my 1990 silverado. I took it to the lot where I bought it and they replaced a torque converter lockout switch or solenoid (not sure). Anyway, since then–no more noises/vibrations. good luck, Chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> If this vibration is loud or audible as you say it is not a miss in the > engine or a slipping TCC, which can mimic an engine miss, it is more likely > a driveshaft problem.
