I don’t think much of a 4 cylinder S-10 with 180K on it but they used to come with two v-6’s. The 2.8 liter or the 4.3. The standard bed was 6 feet but there are lots of them around with a 7 foot bed.. Doesn’t drywall come in 8 foot sections?

Crucial point: The Chevy is a 1977! … (sorry)

Another possibility you might consider is a late 80’s full size GM or Ford station wagon, either a Caprice or Crown Vic. The tailgates on both will drop flat and with the rear seats down they will carry full sheet’s of plywood and drywall. They also offer the protection of keeping the wood and materials dry if you get caught in the rain. If you prefer the pick-up then I would go with the full size Chevy, just take a good look at the engine (leak’s blowing smoke etc.) If the frame and the floor are in good shape I would consider it over the s10 any day. Snow…

Do what I do. Don’t even stop to look at -anything- with 4x. For your use, all you need is 2x and they are the cheapest things on the lot. Seems noone wants to be caught driving a 2x, you just -have- to have 4x need it or not. In my experience 90% or more of the 4x on the road have never been (or needed) to be in 4x. My utility PU currently is a 1989 F150 approaching 150k that has no problems except I will have to replace muffler/tailpipe soon. Live in snow country, drive and haul in the snow and have never needed 4x even once. I lucked into the truck 3 years ago hiding in the back row of a lot. Yes, you now need to really shop to find 2x PUs. Harry K

I need a long bed to haul plywood/drywall/etc. Anything else… I don’t care. What’s my best bet? I’ve looked at very old Trucks that are pretty beat-up but work well, and I’ve looked at newer trucks with really high mileage. I wouldn’t call 75K on a Chevy Silverado high mileage. You didn’t mention what year it was, but you’re talking about a truck that’s generally good for around 150K-200K, minor problems aside. I’ve got 237K on my ‘92 Chevy C-1500 (extended cab longbed) – I’ve replaced the engine (at around 180K) and transmission (around 200K) but the truck hasn’t been treated with the utmost care. : ) Richard – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Hello. You don’t want the S10 – it’s not full-sized. I’ve owned Fords – they’re ok and can be kept running forever, if it’s got a C6 auto transmission or manual. Chevys have good engine/drivetrain reps. Don’t worry about miles – get something that the body is in good shape and that runs. Floyd
