Any and all input will be appreciated. I am interested in buying a 2004 diesel pickup truck. Opinions vary on which company has the best diesel engine. I have heard the Ford engine, which I believe is made by International Harvester has had problems. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this or an opinion they would like to share??? Thanks Tony

Response:

both the powerstroke and the cummins are good motors.  Don’t know about the duramax.  for the best diesel in my opinion go with the ford.  I drive one for work everyday and 300k on the clicker with no problems.

I recentlyl purchased a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD crew cab with the diesel and  Allison tranny.  Everyone will have their own personal opinions as to styling, durability and features, but I will say that having the Allison is a huge selling point for me on these trucks.  I drove Ford F350’s for years in the fire service outfitted as rescue trucks (oversized ambulances) and I have come to be very wary of Ford transmissions from personal experience, but the Allison’s we have used in the past and currently use now have always performed wonderfully. My two cents worth. Cheers – Jonathan — Acta Non Verba – Deeds Not Words Lieutenant Jonathan Race, EMS Supervisor Orange County (FL) Fire-Rescue Department

If you are in the USA… Isuzu pickups may have the 2.8 4JB1 engines available… but they’ll be about as common as hens teeth. but it’s a bulletproof reliable diesel. the C223 while less powerfull and more problematic is still good as far as diesels go.
