SUV/Pick-up bumper height

Around here, they just cut you off or pull out in traffic right in front of you (how’s a 3klb Accord argue with a 5-6klb SUV?), then slow to 5mph to go around a curve… — —
Response:
They don’t know they are doing 90 MPH. Their speedometer says they are only doing 60 ! Dave

damn you! i must get a motorcycle now!

For less than $6k (USD), you can get a new motorcycle that will do 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds straight off the dealer’s floor. My Accord is kinda wimpy, so I get my speed thrills from the bike.

well, apparently they have the money to take that $271 gamble. meanwhile, i commute to work on my motorcycle, and chuckle at the creeping traffic. kinda sucks when its 40 degrees out, but its worth it.

they can DO 90? with those big ass tires? also makes em more vulnerable to flipping.

oh yeah, that reminds me. a friend of mine was telling a similar story. he was out in the desert and he saw an Expedition with a major lift kit and huge ass wheels. but the funny thing is that the Expedition got stuck in a dune or a ditch. those huge ass wheels really kill the low end torque and horsepower, so the guy couldn’t get out. but the funniest part is that this Expedition had to be towed/pulled out of ditch by a stock Chevy Silverado 4×4. i bet all the Chevy guys out there were laughing.

A friend of mine did that in his Eclipse, flipped over a mid-80s K-Blazer. She tried to cross traffic, and he was speeding, probably about 45mph. Totaled both vehicles. This is part of the reason my parents sold their Mustang and bought an SUV. The Mustang kept getting backed into by trucks, it was so low they couldn’t see it. Happened twice in less than a year.

your post is such a strange coincidence. a few weeks ago when i was driving home from work, i saw an accident on the freeway. it was a 3 car mini pile-up. a Camry was up front, an older model Explorer was in the middle, and an 80-something Prelude was at the end. the Prelude acted as a wedge and slid under the Explorer’s bumper and tires. it totally propped the Explorer’s tail end up in the air. the tires of the Explorer rested on hood of the Prelude. my guess is that if the Prelude was going any faster, it would’ve totally flipped the Explorer over the Camry. wow! but in a direct broad side collision, i’m sorry to say that you will most likely be in the hospital for head trauma. depending on the speed and impact, that is. it also depends on the height of the SUV. if the bumper of the SUV clears your roofline at impact, then most likely the blunt of the collision will be with the SUV’s tires. and the most likely end result is the SUV flying over your car and flipping over. — rich – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > A comment — with a fair degree of anger. A side crash between a car and an SUV seems particularly bad for whoever the "target" is. If the SUV hits the car, its bumper is likely to hit above the strong beams in the car’s door, perhaps heading through the window into the driver’s head. If the car hits the SUV, it may go under the SUV and cause it to roll over. — Timothy J. Lee Unsolicited bulk or commercial email is not welcome. I have always thought there should be laws regarding this kind of stuff. Bumper height should be standardized. It is for semi-trucks. Those highly modified monster trucks should not even be street legal. They have the front differential at head height! Dave

At one time I thought there was supposed to be a federal requirement that manufacturers install bumpers that would be a a standardize car height. I imagine, though, that this would be an engineering nightmare. For now — I suppose the best thing to do is keep dodging them. At age 61, I like my manual Prelude and am not about to give in. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> A comment — with a fair degree of anger. The only hope is for MUCH higher gas prices coupled with insurance rates that accurately reflect the risk these and SUVs present. You’re probably right though. The idiot probably thought he/she was just hearing yet another mechanical "feature" the dealer forget to tell her/him about. Of course Honda’s no better in the tonnage/size race than Ford. http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–= Over 100,000 Newsgroups – Unlimited Fast Downloads – 19 Servers =—–
